Common questions
What do I need to run Spec?
A Mac running macOS 13 Ventura or later. Spec runs natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs. No internet connection or account is needed.
How does the free version work?
Spec is free to download and fully edits one script: the first one you change. Other scripts open read-only, so you can still read them. A single one-time purchase unlocks every script. There's no subscription.
Does Spec work with Final Draft files?
Yes. Spec opens and saves .fdx files, the format Final Draft uses, so you can bring your existing drafts and trade pages with anyone. Scene numbers, dual dialogue, script notes, alternate lines, revision colors and title pages come through intact.
Very old Final Draft files (.fdr, from version 7 and earlier) need to be re-saved as .fdx in Final Draft first.
Where are my scripts saved?
Wherever you choose when you save: on your Mac, or in iCloud Drive, Dropbox or another cloud folder. Spec never uploads them anywhere. If a script changes in a cloud folder while it's open, Spec lets you know.
Does Spec autosave? What if my Mac crashes?
Spec never overwrites your file without you pressing Save. While you have unsaved changes, it quietly keeps a recovery copy. If the app or your Mac quits unexpectedly, Spec offers to recover your work the next time you open it.
Recovery copies are deleted as soon as you save or close the script. If you ever need to find them, they're in:
~/Library/Containers/com.davepopkins.screenplay-editor/Data/Library/Application Support/Screenplay Editor/Recovery
I bought the unlock. How do I restore it?
Choose Spec ▸ Unlock Spec…, then Restore Purchase. Use the same Apple Account you bought it with.
How do I see the tips again?
Choose Help ▸ Show Tips.
How do I get help?
Email support@writeonspec.app, or use Help ▸ Contact Support in the app. Tell us what you were doing, what you expected and what happened instead. If a particular script is involved and you're comfortable sharing it, attaching the .fdx helps a lot. You can also reach us at @writeonspec on social media, but please send bug reports by email.
